WHO IS JAN MARIE / JANICE DOLNICK

My legal name is Janice Dolnick. I go by Jan Marie professionally, and both names refer to the same person and the same body of work.

I started working legal forensic nursing cases in 2009, supporting criminal defense attorneys and litigation teams with medical record analysis and forensic timelines. That work became the foundation of Legal Nurses for Justice, the attorney-facing consulting side of what I do.

In 2015, I founded what was first known as Legal Nurses Rock, an education brand built to teach other nurses how to do this work. As the program grew and the specialty became more defined, that education arm became the Institute for Legal Nursing and Forensic Science (ILNFS), which is the organization operating today.

One person, one body of work, three names that reflect how the business grew over time.

WHAT IS CLFN (CERTIFIED LEGAL FORENSIC NURSE)

CLFN stands for Certified Legal Forensic Nurse. It's a training and certification path built specifically for nurses who want to work in legal forensic nursing: analyzing medical records for legal cases, building forensic timelines, and producing reports attorneys use in litigation and criminal defense matters.

It's important to understand that there is no single governing board that licenses or regulates legal nurse consulting or legal forensic nursing as a specialty. No credential in this space, including CLFN, is legally required to do this work. Every training program, including ours, sets its own standard.

What actually matters to the attorneys who hire legal forensic nurses is whether the work product is accurate, thorough, and useful in their case. CLFN is built around that reality: real casework, real report structure, and the skills attorneys are actually looking for, not just a certificate.

LEGAL FORENSIC NURSE VS. LEGAL NURSE CONSULTANT

These terms get used interchangeably, but they're not quite the same thing.

A legal nurse consultant (LNC) broadly reviews medical records for legal cases, most often in medical malpractice and personal injury matters, typically from the plaintiff side.

A legal forensic nurse goes further into forensic analysis: criminal defense cases, cause and timeline of injury, documentation gaps that affect liability, and casework that requires a deeper forensic lens, not just a record summary.

Both roles use a nurse's clinical background. Legal forensic nursing applies that background to a more specialized, higher-stakes category of legal work.

IS THE CLFN PROGRAM A SCAM?

No. If you're searching for CLFN reviews or wondering if this is a scam, you're doing exactly what a smart nurse should do before spending money on any certification, so here's the direct answer.

CLFN is a real training and certification program with a defined curriculum, applied practice cases, and continuing education credits through an accredited CE provider. It's not a get rich quick pitch, and we've never claimed it is. What it offers is a structured path to build a real, specialized skill set that attorneys pay for.

If you're doing your research before a call, good. That's exactly what this page is for. Read the program structure, the support terms, and the accreditation details below, then bring any question you still have straight to us on a call.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE

The CLFN program is built in three (3) phases:

  • Phase 1: Training. Core legal forensic nursing education, covering medical record analysis, forensic timeline construction, documentation review, and report writing built to the standard attorneys expect.

  • Phase 2: Applied Practice. Three applied practice cases, giving nurses hands-on experience working through real case scenarios before they take on paid client work.

  • Phase 3: Launch. Business Build and Ongoing Support. Guidance on building a legal forensic nursing practice, including how to find and work with attorney clients, plus ongoing coaching support.

The full program totals 47 continuing education credits through our California BRN CE Provider accreditation, #17837.

WHAT THE SUPPORT COMMITMENT ACTUALLY IS

To be direct about what ILNFS does and does not promise:

ILNFS does not guarantee employment, clients, cases, revenue, or profit. No program can ethically promise business outcomes, and we don't.

Tuition is non-refundable, except where otherwise required by law.

What we do commit to: eligible graduates who have not secured a qualifying case within six (6) months of launching Phase 3 may have their $49.95 monthly continuation fee waived while eligible support continues. This is a continuation-of-support provision, not a refund or income guarantee.

We want every nurse evaluating this program to understand exactly what they're signing up for before they start.
