FAQ
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there actually enough work out there for this?
Yes. Attorneys handle thousands of cases involving medical records every year and most of them do not have anyone on staff who can read a chart the way a trained nurse can. Personal injury, malpractice, criminal defense, insurance all of these practice areas need clinical eyes on medical records. The demand is there. You are not bound to your local area and can work with attorneys and cases across the country. The shortage is trained nurses who know how to deliver work attorneys trust.
How is this different from legal nurse consulting?
Legal nurse consultants primarily work plaintiff cases and focus on summarizing records. A CLFN works both plaintiff and defense, applies forensic analysis, identifies what is missing or inconsistent, and connects medical facts to legal strategy. It is a more specialized, higher-value role. Most LNC programs stop at education. This one includes business training and real case work before you graduate. Am I limited to where I live or where I am licensed?
No. This is remote, behind-the-scenes consulting work. We are consulting on patient care that has already been done, so it’s not considered active practice. You are not providing patient care, so your nursing license state does not restrict where you can work. CLFN nurses consult with attorneys and firms across the country.
How will I find clients?
You will not be handed a certificate and left to figure it out. The program includes done-for-you outreach scripts, follow-up sequences, and Zoom strategy support on your first reports. Jan Marie has been placing nurses with attorneys since 2009. You learn the exact system she uses.
Do I need legal experience to start?
No. You need clinical experience and a willingness to apply it differently. The program builds your legal knowledge from the ground up. Nurses from all specialties have gone through this, including those who had never read a legal document before enrolling.
Can I do this while still working?
Yes. The program is self-paced with no deadlines. Most nurses complete it while still employed. You can start part-time, take cases evenings or weekends, and transition on your own timeline.
Is there a recognized certification for legal forensic nurses or legal nurse consultants?
There is no universal governing body for this field. What that also means is that no program in this space is more officially recognized than another. The CLFN certification is issued by the Institute for Legal Nursing and Forensic Science. It is approved by the California BRN for 47 CE credits. Attorneys who hire CLFN graduates do so because of the quality of their work.
How long does it take to complete?
You can certify in as little as 6 weeks if you have the time to commit. There is no pressure or deadline. You stay and grow at your own pace.
What insurance do I need?
Professional liability insurance, also called errors and omissions insurance, is recommended but not required before you take on paid cases. It is widely available for legal nurse consultants and is a standard part of running this type of practice. The program covers this as part of your business setup in Phase 3.
Do I have to be a registered nurse to enroll?
No. The program is open to licensed nurses at all levels- LVN/LPN, RN, and NP. If you hold an active nursing license, you qualify. If you are a different type of medical professional (Ex. paramedic, physician assistant, physician, or other healthcare provider) and are interested in this business, CLICK HERE book a call with us to learn more.
Is the CLFN certification legitimate?
Yes. The CLFN certification was created by Janice Dolnick (Jan Marie), BSN, RN, CLFN, who has worked as a legal forensic nurse since 2009. The program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #17837, for 47 continuing education credits, which align with ANCC standards. California Board of Registered Nursing standards are generally accepted for CE credits in many other states. However, it's always advisable for nurses to confirm with their specific state board to ensure compliance with local continuing education requirements. This program has been running since 2015.
Is the program accredited?
Accreditation applies to colleges and universities that grant degrees. It does not apply to independent professional practice training programs like this one. There is no governing board for legal forensic nursing or legal nurse consulting. Every program in this space, without exception, creates its own standards. What sets the CLFN program apart is not a credential on paper. It is that you complete 3 real-world case evaluations before you graduate and leave with a portfolio attorneys can actually evaluate. The program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #17837, for 47 continuing education credits and is ANCC'S Nationally Recognized Accreditation.
Is a certification even necessary to become a legal forensic nurse?
In the legal system, attorneys hire based on work product, not titles. No governing body exists that an attorney checks before hiring a nurse. What matters is whether you can produce reports that save them time and help them build better cases. The CLFN program trains you to do exactly that and gives you the business tools to go find the attorneys who need you.
Is there a guarantee?
We have a 3-case guarantee. Our promise to you is as long as you show up and do the work, you will get results. If you complete the program, show up to the coaching calls, engage with the community, and follow the outreach system we give you and you still do not land 3 cases within 180 days of launching your business, you get a full refund on your enrollment. Being a part of the program and community means you understand and acknowledge that results vary based on effort, experience, case type, market conditions, and individual implementation. This program provides education, tools, and training. It does not guarantee income, clients, case volume, or specific outcomes.
Will I be able to sit for an exam?
The CLFN program does not use a memorization-based exam. After working in this field since 2009 and hiring nurses directly, Jan Marie found that exams measure what you can recall, not whether you can produce work an attorney will pay for. Instead, you complete 3 real practice cases under guided feedback. That process builds repeatable competency, not just a passing score.
How much does the certification cost?
You are not paying for a certification. You are paying for a complete business development system. That includes 47 CE credits, forensic training built from real casework, 3 guided case evaluations, done-for-you outreach tools, unlimited 1:1 mentoring, live workshops, community access, and ongoing support while you land your first paid cases. We have manageable monthly payments. Ask us about our financing options.
Are there cheaper programs out there?
Yes. Most of them give you a PDF and a certificate. They do not include real case work, business training, outreach tools, or mentoring support. If you want to spend less and figure the rest out yourself, those programs exist. If you want a structured path from training to paid cases with support along the way, this is a different investment entirely.
What if I go through the program and do not like the work?
All students are interviewed prior to enrollment. We do not want nurses enrolling in something that is not right for them. That call helps you understand exactly what the day-to-day work looks like before you commit. We always encourage prospective students to do thorough research before making any investment decision. People online say this is a scam. Is it?
The CLFN program has been running since 2015 under the Institute for Legal Nursing and Forensic Science, a California BRN approved continuing education provider. Jan Marie has hired hundreds of nurses into legal forensic roles through her own practice and has worked on nationally featured cases. The program has helped thousands of nurses. Criticism exists in every industry. We let our graduates speak for themselves. Please join our free Skool community to learn more about legal forensic nursing consulting CLICK HERE. We always encourage prospective students to do their due diligence before making a financial commitment.
Why do I see different business names? Legal Nurses Rock, Legal Nurses for Justice, and the Institute for Legal Nursing & Forensic Science
Legal Nurses Rock was the original community brand. As the program grew and Jan Marie pursued formal recognition through the California Board of Registered Nursing. The BRN required the organization to be structured and named as an institution to qualify for CE provider status. That is why the name is now the Institute for Legal Nursing & Forensic Science.
Legal Nurses for Justice (LN4J) is a separate operating business which Jan Marie and her team consult on medical-legal casework with attorneys. It is not the Institution. When you see Jan Marie referencing LN4J in videos, testimonials, or on her current website, she is referencing the casework business, not the certification program.
Is this a pyramid scheme or MLM?
Absolutely not. This is a professional education and business training program designed to teach registered nurses how to build careers as Certified Legal Forensic Nurse Consultants.
A pyramid scheme (or MLM) is a business model where participants primarily earn money by recruiting other people into the program, rather than by providing a legitimate product or service. Pyramid schemes are illegal in the United States because they rely on recruitment instead of creating real value.
Our program is the complete opposite. Here's how we're different:
You are paying for education, training, mentorship, and continuing education credits-not the right to recruit other nurses.
You never have to recruit another nurse to make money. In fact, the overwhelming majority of our graduates never refer anyone to us.
We do not pay commissions or bonuses for recruiting students. Your success comes from working directly with attorneys as an independent Legal Forensic Nurse Consultant-not from building a "team."
Your income comes from your own professional services. Attorneys hire you to review medical records, prepare chronologies, identify deviations from standards of care, and provide case support. They pay you for your nursing expertise.
You own your own business. We don't take a percentage of your consulting fees, your invoices, or your attorney relationships. Every dollar you earn from your clients belongs to you.
Our program is an educational course that teaches a specialized nursing skill, much like obtaining training in aesthetics, case management, informatics, or wound care. The difference is that we also teach you how to market yourself, build relationships with attorneys, and launch your consulting business.
Additionally, our continuing education is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing for CE credit, and our curriculum is designed specifically for registered nurses seeking to expand their professional opportunities.
Our mission is simple: teach nurses a highly specialized consulting skill so they can build successful businesses serving the legal community- not recruit other nurses.
If you're still unsure, we encourage you to ask questions. An educated nurse is an empowered nurse, and we're always happy to explain exactly how this profession works.
