Yes. Attorneys handle thousands of cases involving medical records every year and most of them do not have anyone on staff who can read a chart the way a trained nurse can. Personal injury, malpractice, criminal defense, insurance all of these practice areas need clinical eyes on medical records. The demand is there. You are not bound to your local area and can work with attorneys and cases across the country. The shortage is trained nurses who know how to deliver work attorneys trust.
-
No. This is remote, behind-the-scenes consulting work. You are not providing patient care, so your nursing license state does not restrict where you can work. CLFN nurses work with attorneys and firms across the country.
-
Yes. The program is self-paced with no deadlines. Most nurses complete it while still employed. You can start part-time, take cases evenings or weekends, and transition on your own timeline.
-
No. In the legal system, attorneys hire based on work product, not titles. No governing body exists that an attorney checks before hiring a nurse. What matters is whether you can produce reports that save them time and help them build better cases. The CLFN program trains you to do exactly that and gives you the business tools to go find the attorneys who need you.
-
Yes. The CLFN certification was created by Janice Dolnick (Jan Marie), BSN, RN, CLFN, who has worked as a legal forensic nurse since 2009. The program is approved by the California Board of Registered Nursing, Provider #17837, for 47 continuing education credits, which align with ANCC standards. California Board of Registered Nursing standards are generally accepted for CE credits in many other states. However, it's always advisable for nurses to confirm with their specific state board to ensure compliance with local continuing education requirements. This program has been running since 2015.
